Preliminary Research

This is my research on what genre to choose for the project.















Pop

Taylor Swift – Blank Space


Genre Conventions:

  • Fast-paced cuts

  • Luxurious settings

  • Bright, dramatic lighting

  • Glamorous costumes

  • Storytelling focused on romance and drama

Representation:

  1. Wealth and relationships, portraying a luxurious lifestyle with themes of heartbreak.

  2. Swift represents the "crazy ex-girlfriend" trope in a satirical manner.

Likes/Dislikes:

Liked the satire and visual appeal, but the exaggerated portrayal of the trope might feel overdone.



Dua Lipa – New Rules


Genre Conventions:

  • Energetic choreography

  • Vibrant colors

  • Synchronized group movements

Representation:

Female empowerment and friendship, showcasing women helping each other overcome toxic relationships.

Likes/Dislikes:

Liked the empowering message and choreography, though some visuals felt repetitive.

Nirvana – Smells Like Teen Spirit

Representation:

Youth rebellion and anti-establishment themes, reflecting disillusionment with societal norms.

Liked the iconic visuals and storytelling, though the surreal elements may confuse some viewers.

Kendrick Lamar – HUMBLE.

Representation:

Critique of materialism and societal norms, addressing self-empowerment and authenticity.

Likes/Dislikes:

Liked the sharp social commentary and creative visuals, though some may find the imagery too abstract.

Highlights generosity and charity, focusing on real people and everyday struggles.

Urban nightlife and personal isolation, reflecting inner struggles.

Likes/Dislikes:

Liked the cinematic visuals and storytelling, but the darker tone may not appeal to everyone.

Self-Reflection:

This really helped me understand the different types of music genres which will allow me to better choose the type of music I will be choosing for the project. I'm very glad we had this lesson covered because I had little to none knowledge about music. I only listen to music I like, and I don't do in-depth research about it.
